Botanical Garden

Botanical Garden
Mum said “time to get out of bed”

On Friday the 23rd of February 2015, we hopped on a double Decker bus to go to Botanical Garden. It was a long trip. I sat next to the window. I had  great view from where I sat.

When we got off the bus all I wanted to do was to stretch. We walked to the courtyard and we had morning tea.

At the children's garden, we listened to a story, the story was called the magic moment. We had to get a plastic mat, we chose a place and sat down to listen to the forest. It was noisy. We also got to identify plants, the teacher gave us cards that had names of the plants and we sorted them out.

After that we gathered seeds. We looked inside the seed to see if they were good for planting, yellow is good and brown is bad.

Next we went to the garden center. We had three choices seed, pricking or cutting (harakeke). I chose cutting, we went to this place where there are harakeke. We cut a bit and put the end in the mixture that is made out of honey and water. We put the end in the yogurt containers and soil then pressed it down to make it secure.

Then we had lunch at the courtyard. After lunch we went on a bush walk, it was lots of fun! After that we had to go back to school, it was so disappointing.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day

ANZAC is short for Australia New Zealand Army Corp. On ANZAC day we commemorate the people who died defending our country in the wars. Many women and men were killed in the war in 1915 in Gallipoli.

We commemorate ANZAC by wearing a poppy. We can buy ANZAC biscuits to donate money for charities. The poppy is the first plant to grow where they fought in. We also commemorate ANZAC by showing respect by celebrating the Dawn ceremony.

ANZAC day normally starts with the Dawn ceremony that is usually held at your local war memorial. Dawn ceremony starts at 4.00 in the morning and last for a few hours. Dawn marks the time when the ANZACs landed in gallipoli on 25th March 1915 and holds a symbolism for darkness making way for new day.

Looking after the hive

Looking after the hive
Bees have a very important role, especially worker bees. Looking after the queen, building the honey comb and defending the hive. They also feed the larvae ( the baby bees) and the queen. The bees are very tidy and hard working. They keep all the cells in the hive tidy, repair any damages and make sure the hive is the right temperature. They make the right temperature by vibrating their wings using their muscles to warm it up, or by spreading water around and fanning their wings to cool them down.

Thank you Rochelle and Deepika

Thank you Rochelle and Deepika
Thank you Rochelle and Deepika for teaching me how to ride a two wheel bike. You taught me fundamental skills of biking. Like we have to check our bikes and helmets every time we go biking. Did you know there are different names for the checks? Like A,B,C and M. A is for air, you need to pump your tyres, B is for brakes, you need to check your brakes if they are working. C is for chain, you need to see if your chain is not too rusty. And the M check, is looking at the arch in the bike. We also learnt different types of biking. Like pedal tap, biking through small corners and biking with other people. On the 25th of March 2015, I went to school not knowing how to bike. And went home asking for a bike because now I know how to bike.

Thank you Rochelle and Deepika

Fruit fly

Fruit fly
As I was driving to my piano concert I saw a sign saying  ‘Beware fruit flies invasion.’ How are fruit flies  dangerous?

Fruit flies can be dangerous because it can lay maggots in fruit. Most specially fruits with seeds like peaches, tomatoes, apples and many more.  If you eat the fruit that has been envied with fruit flies you will get a disease. And did you know that they have been a problem before because they've already been here 12 times?

If there was no biosecurity there would be an invasion of unwanted pests, insects and plants. Fruit flies can affect our economy because we are the best producers of fruit, vegetables and dairy in the world. If our fruits get infested with fruit flies our economy will go down and we will lose a lot of money.

The government is trying to eradicate all the fruit flies using a spray. In the spray they use a high toxic liquid called befipronil an insecticide. They spray the fruit trees with this insecticide to kill fruit flies. And this is only done in zone A area. For the rest of the places they use a bait.
